Currently reading So You Wanna Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo, and I am absorbing and learning so much from her on topics that I naively thought I had a clear understanding of. Her chapter on privilege was humbling, eye-opening, and filled with truth. I think pure truth and goodness have a certain quality to them—a quality that you can easily discern, even (and often especially) if it makes you uncomfortable. Her reminder to “check your privilege” made me realize how much I have had handed to me. Even in the accomplishments I am most proud of, there are undeniable advantages that have been unfairly given to me for no reason other than that the systems in which I live have been built to benefit people with characteristics similar to mine. This includes race, financial stability, physical appearance, location, mental and physical ability, family dynamics, education and the list goes on. By being aware of our privilege, we can use the platform it gives us to question and dismantle the systems that perpetuate it. The pursuit of social justice requires that we stop coasting along blissfully unaware of the ways in which we have an unfair advantage. Let’s do our best to level the playing field, because the world isn’t as fair as the illusions we lean on for comfort.

In May, Concept Aspire will be celebrating one year since its inception! In honor of hitting the one year mark, we will be releasing a PRINT PUBLICATION with the help of various collaborators. The magazine will have thought provoking articles (like “Cultivating Open-Mindedness”) as well as pieces of poetry, excerpts of fiction, and perhaps some visual art contributions!

I look after a couple of young boys three times a

I look after a couple of young boys three times a week. Usually we spend about an hour in the garden. They mortar bricks with mud and small spades, and fill small dump trucks with more dirt for their constructions. Sometimes we bring bubbles. And they disappear as soon as they came into existence, popping so quickly that we have no choice but to forget to remember them and go merrily on our own way. 💨
