There are so many wonderful flavors that I associate with Christmas, from peppermint, to gingerbread, nutmeg, and clove. But two of my favorites are undoubtedly orange and chocolate. You can eat them separate in the form of a clementine and hot chocolate, or you can step it up a notch with these heavenly orange chocolate meltaways.
A sophisticated Christmas candy, they have the silkiest of consistencies. They’re sure to be the hit of your holiday season. Just follow the recipe below and let the taste bring you to a better place!
Ingredients:
- 1 package (11.5 oz) of milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon of grated orange zest
- 2.5 teaspoons of orange extract
- 2.5 cups of finely chopped toasted pecans
Coating:
- 1 cup of milk chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons of shortening
Instructions:
- Place chocolate chips in a bowl and set aside.
- In a saucepan, bring heavy cream and orange zest to a gentle boil, then immediately pour over the chocolate chips. Let the combination stand for one minute before whisking into a smooth melted consistency.
- Whisk in orange extract, then cover and chill for 35 minutes (or until the mixture begins to thicken).
- Beat mixture for 10-15 seconds (or just until it lightens in color) being careful not to overbeat.
- Spoon rounded teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets lined with wax-paper. Cover and chill for 5 minutes.
- Gently shape the teaspoonfuls into round balls. Roll half of the batch so that they are completely covered nuts.
- In a microwave, melt chocolate and shortening, stirring until smooth. Dip the remaining half of the batch in the silky chocolate mixture, allowing the excess to drip off.
- Let the meltaways stand until set. Place them in mini cupcake cases to serve, and store in the fridge.
